Helicopter Flight Data Monitoring (HFDM) for ASIAS

The aviation community has made significant strides in advancing safety through a forensic approach, reviewing and learning from accidents. The Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS) program goes a step further, applying proactive and prognostic capabilities to identify risks before accidents occur. ASIAS is a collaborative partnership between government and industry to promote aviation safety.

Leveraging the experience, techniques, and lessons-learned from the success of ASIAS and the Commercial Aviation Safety Team, rotorcraft research is underway to develop more robust helicopter data and new analytical tools designed for the unique nature of helicopter operations. Helicopter flight data research is led by the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, NJ and lays the foundation for future helicopter data analysis in ASIAS. This research:

  • Collects flight data from commercial and government operators to be used for analysis
  • Explores flight data monitoring as a voluntary means to improve safety across the industry
  • Develops secure, confidential, and protected safety analysis of aggregate flight data records
  • Supports risk mitigation efforts through the ASIAS program
